Kevin Anderson will be sidelined until the clay-court season because of a shoulder injury and ankle surgery.

The 29-year-old South African, in an announcement on Facebook, said he had been told to take some time off for his shoulder, and decided to also have ankle surgery during his layoff.

"I've had some injury problems which have caused me to withdraw from a few tournaments recently,” he wrote. “My shoulder hasn’t been firing as it should … I therefore took this time to have some (very minor) surgery on my ankle yesterday – which the doctor said went very well. The ankle hasn’t been a huge problem, but I’m told that this procedure should extend my career for a few more years in the long run."

He said he is hoping to play some clay-court tournaments.

Anderson has had an injury-plagued season, retiring during the Australian Open and in Delray Beach. He also withdrew from Indian Wells and Miami.

Anderson has not identified a specific tournament at which he plans to rejoin the tour.
