Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from Indian Wells with the same arm injury that has kept her sidelined since the Australian Open, tournament organizers announced.

The former world No. 1 first experienced soreness in Wuhan last season, and withdrew from her first scheduled event of 2016 in Brisbane.

"I am extremely disappointed that I am unable to compete,” the Los Angeles-based Sharapova said in a statement. “…I have been focused on healing my left forearm injury and tried to get my body to be 100 percent ready to play this event, as it is one of my favorite events on the WTA.”

Venus Williams is scheduled to return following a long boycott of the event. She will join younger sister Serena, who will be the top seed at the tournament.
