Victoria Azarenka has issued a declaration of intent for the clay season, saying she wants to refute suggestions that she cannot be as effective on the slow surface.

The Belarussian is up to No. 5 in the rankings following back-to-back victories on hard courts at Indian Wells and Miami, and says she is "definitely very motivated for clay season."

Azarenka, whose two Grand Slam singles titles have also come on hard courts at the Australian Open, wants to show that she can win on other surfaces.

"I always been a high favorite of proving people wrong, and that's what also motivates me a lot," she said to press in Miami.

"Going into clay season, people say it's not my favorite surface and whatever, I'm going to work pretty hard to make sure it's going to be my favorite surface. I'm going to put in the work that's needed and the adjustments that's needed."

Azarenka noted that she was still coming back from a foot injury last year, but still managed to reached the quarterfinals at Rome and led in both her three-set defeats to Serena Williams in Madrid and the French Open. "With my injury, I had some pretty good results despite that," she said.

Azarenka has previously reached the semifinals of the French Open.
