Nicholas Mahut is the new world No. 1 in doubles.

The Frenchman clinched the top spot when Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez defeated Bob and Mike Bryan in the French Open doubles final.

According to L’Equipe, the 34-year-old’s reaction to becoming No. 1 was "pride and relief.”

Mahut is the third doubles No. 1 this season, following Jamie Murray and Marcelo Melo.

Mahut retired from his second-round singles match against Marcel Granollers with injury at the French Open, and he and partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert lost to Feliciano and Marc Lopez, 7-6 (7), 6-1, in the fourth round. Mahut and Herbert won the U.S. Open last year and Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo this year.

Mahut, best known for playing the longest singles match of all-time against John Isner at Wimbledon, has won three career singles titles, all of which came on grass.

He is the defending singles champion in 's-Hertogenbosch.
