Many observers noted that Eugenie Bouchard was at a crossing in her career in 2015. She slumped after achieving outsized success the previous season, which included a Wimbledon-final appearance. After her ouster from the 2016 French Open in Paris, she found herself at a different crossing: seeking to enter the Netherlands, and facing down a classic "zing!" moment delivered by a local guard.

All Bouchard wanted to do was pass the Netherlands border, but the guard—presumably a fan of upstart Roland Garros semifinalist Kiki Bertens, his compatriot—had other things in mind, namely a timely and hopefully good-natured quip.

Bouchard seemed to take it in stride, evidenced by the fact that she tweeted about the exchange. If she plays her game right, she may offer a few zing-ing winners of her own soon enough. The major event where she’s had her most success is on tap for later this month.
