JACKSON, Miss. (AP) The Jackson State men's tennis team has been placed on probation and its former coach has received a two-year show-cause penalty after the NCAA ruled he allowed an ineligible player to compete under an eligible player's name.

The NCAA announced the ruling Friday. The school received one year of probation, a $5,000 fine, and public reprimand and censure.

The ruling didn't name the former coach, but Jackson State athletic department spokesman Wesley Peterson identified him as Scott Pennington. Peterson said Pennington was fired at the end of Jackson State's internal investigation. The violations occurred in 2015.

Pennington's show-cause penalty runs through June 30, 2018. If an NCAA member school hires him during that period, he is prohibited from all coaching and recruiting duties.
