Before each day of play in Toronto and Montreal, we'll preview and predict three must-see matches.

It's been a whirlwind week-and-a-half for Coric in North America. The 19-year-old—it feels like he’s been on tour for at least five years now—began it in Portland with one of the biggest wins of his career, over Jack Sock, to clinch Croatia’s comeback Davis Cup quarterfinal win over the United States. Then he moved on to Washington, D.C., where he was quickly sent packing by Gael Monfils. Finally, on Monday, Coric survived a death march over his countryman, Ivan Dodig, in the Toronto heat. Will he have anything left for a well-rested Berdych, who is coming off a solid run to the semis at Wimbledon and has won both of their previous matches in straight sets? As a teenager, Coric still has energy to waste, but probably not that much.

Winner: Berdych

They’ve been Grand Slam finalists; now they’re meeting in the first round in Montreal. Safarova and Bouchard have fallen for differing reasons, but they’ve shown tentative signs of rebounding of late. The 28th-ranked Czech reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, while the 42nd-ranked Canadian put together a couple of decent grass-court results over the last month. Safarova won their only previous match, three years ago in Quebec City, but there’s not much to separate these two talent-wise. The question may be how Bouchard, a Montreal native, reacts to the home crowd. In 2014, a few weeks after reaching the Wimbledon final, she lost two bagel sets to Shelby Rogers. She did win a set in between them, but still.

Winner: Safarova

From an entertainment perspective, this glorified rock fight may be of interest only to U.S. fans. But the battle between the 18-year-old Californian and the 37-year-old Croat—Karlovic turned pro when Fritz was 3 years old—will be an interesting test for the younger player. Karlovic doesn’t force his opponents to run, but he does force them to play under the extreme pressure of knowing that a couple of loose points on their serves can cost them a set. It won’t be fun for Fritz, but it will be an experience. These two have never faced each other. Karlovic is coming off a run to the final in D.C. We’ll see if that makes him confident, or leaves him gassed, for this one.

Winner: Karlovic
