NEW YORK—Gael Monfils, who jumped into the on-court clock during his first-round U.S. Open match against Gilles Muller, says he was relieved to avoid injury.

The clock fell and broke as Monfils jumped away just in time to stop it from landing on him. The moment has been heavily replayed online.

“When you are in the moment you don't feel really anything,” said the Frenchman, who won in straight sets. Just jump. I saw was a wall, but it was quite lucky.

“I was surprised, because it hurt me a little bit. You know, could be pretty bad. Could have fallen on my ankle or calf and could be more than that.”
