NEW YORK—Rafael Nadal has been eliminated from the U.S. Open before the quarterfinal round for the second consecutive year, losing to No. 24 seed Lucas Pouille of France, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (6). The Spaniard lost to Fabio Fognini last year, also in five sets.

Nadal saved three match points in the fifth-set tiebreaker to force a changeover at 6-6. On the ensuing point, Nadal used his patented, spin-heavy forehand to take command of the rally, but in trying to hit behind Pouille, Rafa put a subsequent forehand into net:
