Twenty-one-year-old Madison Keys was a 21-hour flight away from Wrigley Field on Saturday night, but the reverberations of the Chicago Cubs’ pennant-clinching victory—their first since 1945—were felt all the way across the globe.

Particularly so for Keys, who lost her opening match at the WTA Finals in Singapore in straight sets.

“Go Cubs, best part of my day,” the Rock Island, Ill. native said with a wry smile after falling to Simona Halep, 6-2, 6-4.

In Chicago and its environs, you’re born into a baseball team: the Cubs or White Sox. The Cubs, from Chicago’s north side, haven’t won a World Series since—incredibly—1908. The White Sox, from the the city’s south side, recently won the title in 2005.

“I have a couple of Sox fans as friends,” said Keys about the excitement back in her home state. “So didn’t really talk to them."
