Juan Martin del Potro will not play the Paris Masters, saying he wants to be in top shape for the Davis Cup final.

The Argentine won the title in Stockholm a week ago and is into the quarterfinals in Basel, where he will play Kei Nishikori. When the tournament is over, the plan is to "return to Argentina and start training for the Davis Cup," he told Swiss newspaper Tribune de Geneve.

Argentina, led by Del Potro, will travel to Zagreb next month to play Croatia for the Davis Cup.

Del Potro would have required a wild card to play Paris, as his ranking was too low when official entries were made. His decision not to play was confirmed by the announcement of the tournament wildcards; the 28-year-old was not among them.

Del Potro is No. 42 in the rankings.
