Madison Keys hit the shot of the day on Tuesday at the WTA Finals in Singapore.

Up 4-3, 30-15 after taking the first set 6-1, the American hit a brilliant running crosscourt forehand for a winner. The world No. 7 would go on to beat Dominika Cibulkova, 6-1, 6-4, for her first career WTA Finals victory.

Keys, who lost to Simona Halep in straight sets on Sunday, is now 1-1 in the round-robin stage. Cibulkova lost to world No. 1 Angelique Kerber on Day 1 of the year-end tournament, and is now 0-2 in the Red Group.

Keys held her ground throughout, hitting 26 winners and never facing a break point, and improved to 4-0 lifetime against the Slovak.

“[I] definitely feel a lot better after this match,” Keys said after leveling her record. “Being able to kind of play with less of the nerves and kind of know what to expect definitely helped me tonight.”

All four players in the Red Group—Keys (1-1), Cibulkova (0-2), Halep (1-1) and Kerber (2-0)—are still alive in their quest to reach the semifinals.

On Thursday, in the group’s final round-robin matches, Keys will take on Kerber and Cibulkova will look to upset Halep.
