Hours after clinching the year-end No. 1 ranking, Andy Murray strolled through the bowels of The 02 Arena in London with host Rob Curling, taking time to both reflect and discuss more immediate plans.

On his way to fulfill some post-match requirements, Murray was asked if his ascent went as predicted.

“I never expected to do it, but I felt that if I did have a chance it would be the early part of next year,” Murray said.

The thought process was logical due to a lack of points he would have to defend in February and March, after a tough string at the Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami this season.

It’s “an unexpected way to finish the year, but a nice finish to the year, obviously,” the Scot added.

The next couple of weeks will be busy for Murray. He plans to spend some time at home, and then head to Scotland for his father’s wedding. He will follow that up with a trip to his offseason training base in Miami. Then it’s back home for Christmas.

In other words, the whirlwind continues for the new year-end No. 1.
