BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Jack Sock and John Isner gave the United States a sweep of Friday's singles matches in a first-round Davis Cup tie against Switzerland.

Sock and Steve Johnson then won their doubles match in three sets Saturday, sending the United States to the Davis Cup quarterfinals with a 3-0 victory over Switzerland.

Sock, the world's 20th-ranked player, defeated No. 146 Marco Chiudinellli 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 in the first match at Legacy Arena. Isner dropped the first set before rebounding to beat Henri Laaksonen 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (1).

Switzerland was without the country's two best players: 18-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and three-time major champ Stan Wawrinka. Federer won the Australian Open on Sunday night.

Sock said he started out playing tentative but got a lift from an early service break.

"There are always a few extra nerves, I think, playing Davis Cup," he said. "When you're playing for your country, being a part of a team, maybe at a normal event, normal tournament, you come out swinging a little bit more.

"I think I was a little hesitant at the beginning. Maybe too conservative playing when obviously my game is to kind of play big and hit big forehands and be aggressive."

Sock and Johnson, bronze medalists in men's doubles at the Rio Olympics, beat Henri Laaksonen and Adrien Bossel 7-6 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Switzerland was without the country's two best players this weekend: 18-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and three-time major champ Stan Wawrinka. Federer won the Australian Open last Sunday night.

"We played together a bunch of times in the past, so just once we get going we get the familiarity back with one another," Johnson said. "Everything kind of clicked toward the end or we got it going, so just keep it rolling."

The Americans are now 158-4 all-time in Davis Cup ties when taking a 2-0 lead.

Querrey and Johnson won their singles matches Sunday to complete the United States' second straight Davis Cup sweep of Switzerland.

Querrey defeated Adrien Bossel 6-3, 7-5. Then Johnson, who clinched the Americans' victory Saturday in doubles with Sock, won his Davis Cup singles debut over Antoine Bellier, 6-4, 6-3.

The U.S. will travel to play Australia for the World Group Quarterfinals on April 7-9.

The U.S. is 26-20 all-time vs. Australia in a rivalry that dates back to 1905, winning their last meeting 3-1 in Australia in the 2016 World Group First Round.

Switzerland will compete in the World Group Playoff on Sept. 15-17.
