Fabio Fognini says he does not know which clay events he will play because his wife, former professional player Flavia Pennetta, is expecting their first child in a few weeks.

Fognini said he had played the South American clay court tournaments and then talked to Pennetta about whether to play the hard court Masters events.

"I was not sure [if I should] play Indian Wells. I ask her, 'Listen, I have this question for you,'" he told press in Miami. "At the same time I start to feel [I am] competing better and better, but [you] have the priority now.

"You decide or tell me if you're feeling good, you are happy, you stay home and I going to play. If not, of course I coming home."

The Italian decided to head to Miami, which ended up being a good move. He reached the semifinals of theĀ  tournament, his best performance in a hard court Masters. Now, he has to decide his schedule for the clay court season, a surface that is usually his best. He is also scheduled to play in the Davis Cup next week.

"I mean, I play every week on clay. That's the big thing," he said. "The other, I have to decide when I'm leaving for sure, I go home, and I have also Davis Cup.

"We have to decide what is the best solution...after Miami, what we [are] going to do if she feeling good or not. It's a lot of tournaments, so I have to make a really good plan."
