Some top names , such as reigning French Open champion Garbine Muguruza, Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki, are experiencing injury problems going into Roland Garros. Their ailments could further unsettle a women's field lacking Grand Slam champions in Serena Wlliams, Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova.

Muguruza retired down 4-1 in the semifinals in Rome this past weekend, saying she had almost not taken the court following an injury during her pre-match warm-up.

"It's not very good, obviously, because it's something that, I don't know, you do a bad movement and suddenly your neck got stuck," she said. "I didn't know what to do, because I couldn't really serve in there. But I'm, like, ‘I'm going to go on the court.’ I'm going to try. You know what? Maybe I can serve slower or something."

But despite deciding to retire, Muguruza said she is not concerned that the injury will still affect her at the French Open.

"No," she said. "Yeah, I had this before."

Earlier this year, before the Australian Open, Muguruza retired in the Brisbane quarterfinals.

In the Rome final against Elina Svitolina on Sunday, Halep experienced an ankle problem that began in the second set.

“I had pain, and I still have pain when I walk," she told press. "I had many on the other leg, but this one is new."

The injury prevented her from running during the third set of the 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 defeat, the Romanian added. Halep won Madrid, and has been the best clay-court performer on the WTA tour so far this season.

She indicated that she should largely recover in time for the French Open.

"I think it's enough, for an ankle, but I have to do MRI to see what it is," she said. "I will have few days off, recovering with everything, and then to start again."

Wozniacki, who has done little on clay this season, retired after dropping the first set to Shelby Rogers in Strasbourg on Monday. The former world No. 1 described it as precautionary.

"I came back and had my chances to win that first set, and then I started feeling my back," she told the WTA website. "At this point, I think it's important for me to try and get ready for the French Open and be 100 percent for that."

Halep is No. 4, Muguruza is No. 5 and Wozniacki is No. 12 in the WTA rankings.
