Some top names , such as reigning French Open champion Garbine Muguruza, Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki, are experiencing injury problems going into Roland Garros. Their ailments could further unsettle a women's field lacking Grand Slam champions in Serena Wlliams, Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova.
Muguruza retired down 4-1 in the semifinals in Rome this past weekend, saying she had almost not taken the court following an injury during her pre-match warm-up.
"It's not very good, obviously, because it's something that, I don't know, you do a bad movement and suddenly your neck got stuck," she said. "I didn't know what to do, because I couldn't really serve in there. But I'm, like, ‘I'm going to go on the court.’ I'm going to try. You know what? Maybe I can serve slower or something."
But despite deciding to retire, Muguruza said she is not concerned that the injury will still affect her at the French Open.
"No," she said. "Yeah, I had this before."
Earlier this year, before the Australian Open, Muguruza retired in the Brisbane quarterfinals.
In the Rome final against Elina Svitolina on Sunday, Halep experienced an ankle problem that began in the second set.
