Elina Svitolina says that she is not the favorite coming into the French Open, despite winning the Rome title.

The Ukrainian has won four tournaments this year, but she has yet to reach a semifinal at a Grand Slam.

Svitolina said there are no favorites in the women's field, and their chances could also be affected by the conditions.

“I cannot name some players," she said at a press conference following her victory. "Of course there are so many players that can play really good. It's gonna matter the conditions of the court, because if the courts are gonna be under water for a couple of days and raining and stuff … So it's gonna be advantage for people who are smacking the ball so hard.

“So hopefully the courts will be dry, and we will have more opportunities for clay-court players. There [are] so many factors ... it's a Grand Slam. There is so much pressure. Everyone is so hungry to win. There is no one I can name as a favorite.”

But with a three-set victory over Simona Halep in the final of Rome, she is now among the players with a good chance to go deep at the clay-court major, especially with some of the top names not playing. Garbine Muguruza won the 2016 French Open, defeating Serena Williams in the final, but the Spaniard has struggled the past year and Williams is not playing because she is pregnant. Two-time French Open champion Maria Sharapova isn’t playing, either, because she was not given a wild card.

The 22-year-old has won four tournaments this season— Taiwan, Dubai (defeating Caroline Wozniacki in the final), Istanbul (beating Karolina Pliskova on clay in the final) and now Rome, beating French Open champ Muguruza—who retired in the first set in the semis—and Halep.

In 2015, Svitolina reached the quarterfinals at the French Open, losing to Ana Ivanovic.

Svitolina, now at a career-high No. 6, says that she is now more mature, and hopes she can go further at the French Open.

“I will try to do it, because I have been working with my coach [veteran Gabriel Urpi],” Svitolina said. “We was just speaking about it, about preparation that I can do to prepare differently for a Grand Slam. During the season, play less tournaments, because now I'm almost each week playing, like, lots of matches. Also, because it also damage[s], sometimes, your mental part and your physical part in a Grand Slam—when you need to be there, like, 100 percent.

"I know that I was not doing something right, but I will try to think about it."
