On a rain-shortened day in Paris, Stan Wawrinka and Simona Halep wasted little time moving into the fourth round of the French Open.

Wawrinka, who won this tournament in 2015, didn’t have much trouble with Italian Fabio Fognini. The Swiss took care of him, 7-6 (2), 6-0, 6-2, to set up a match with either Gael Monfils or Richard Gasquet for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Monfils led his countryman and friend, 6-5, in the first set when play was suspended.

After narrowly losing the opening set, Fognini showed some life in the third. He had three break points in the sixth game, but Wawrinka swiftly saved all three to hold for 4-2. He broke the 29th seed in the ensuing game and then clinched the match on his third match point.

Halep had a relatively routine go of it, too. The third seed, who reached the Roland Garros final in 2014, defeated Daria Kasatkina, 6-0, 7-5.

The Romanian jumped all over the 20-year-old Russian, taking the first set in just 27 minutes, and broke her opponent’s serve six times.

Halep was questionable for the tournament in the lead-up to the event, but the 25-year-old said after the match that her ankle feels strong and she has no issues running, sliding or moving.

The world No. 4 will play Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro for a quarterfinal berth.
