Nick Kyrgios is charged up for the Davis Cup semifinal, saying that playing for his country helps him to truly enjoy the game.

The 22-year-old has said that joining the team for Australia's first-round tie helped him produce good runs in Miami and Indian Wells, and he's looking for a similar boost following a first-round exit at Flushing Meadows.

"Davis Cup has done wonders for me," he said at a press conference before this week's semifinal tie. "Davis Cup, for me, is one of the most important events that I can play.

“You’re not playing for yourself, and I find it easier to play for these guys. And I feel it’s helped me so much throughout my career. These are the most fun weeks of my career, no doubt."

The No. 20-ranked player is friendly with Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt and team members like Thanasi Kokkinakis, but he is distancing himself from another fellow Australian, Bernard Tomic.

Kyrgios has been questioned about his commitment to the game, while Tomic recently said he is lacking motivation and was left off the Davis Cup team.

"You’d also be wrong if you tried to lump me in the same category as Bernard Tomic," Kyrgios wrote in an entry for an Australian website. "We were pretty good mates when I was younger. I obviously didn’t know the tennis tour too well back then, and we were guys of similar age representing the same country, on the road at many of the same tournaments.

"But a lot has changed ... He says one thing and he does the other."

Kyrgios is the top Davis Cup singles player for Australia, which is taking on Belgium in the semifinals.
