Rafael Nadal and Garbine Muguruza ensured a Spanish double at the top of the rankings next week, with Nadal set to stay No. 1 in the ATP rankings and Muguruza reaching the top spot in the WTA rankings for the first time in her career.
Nadal clinched the top ranking when Roger Federer exited in the quarterfinals of the US Open, and will now increase his 500-point lead further during the tournament.
Nadal returned to No. 1 for the first time since 2014 when Federer withdrew from Cincinnati two weeks ago. His stellar clay-court run, which included a 10th title at the French Open, along with solid hard-court showings at the start of the season, have seen him climb back to the top spot.
Muguruza had been among eight WTA players with a shot at reaching No. 1 during the US Open, and a fourth-round showing kept her in front of the rest of the other contenders. She clinched the ranking when Karolina Pliskova exited in the quarterfinals.
Muguruza won Wimbledon, her second Grand Slam victory, and then took the title at the WTA event in Cincinnati. She is the 24th player to become No. 1 in the WTA rankings.
The previous simultaneous ATP and WTA No. 1s from the same country were Andre Agassi and Serena Williams in 2003.
