Sam Querrey sees the opening in the US Open draw, but can he take it?

Sam Querrey says the men's field has been looking to take advantage of having so many top players currently sidelined.

Five of the Top 10—Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic—did not play the US Open. Most also did not play the lead-up events in Montreal and Cincinnati, with Alexander Zverev winning Montreal and Grigor Dimitrov winning his first Masters title in Cincinnati, beating Nick Kyrgios in the final.

"There's just an opening right now for different guys to go far in Masters series and Grand Slams," said Querrey. "Like you saw, you know, Dimitrov and Kyrgios in Cincinnati, here with the bottom half of the draw. It's a little more opportunity, and kind of a freak year with all these injuries. Everyone is trying to do the best they can."

There are no former Grand Slam finalists in the bottom half of the men's draw, and Querrey is the lone player to have reached a Grand Slam semifinal in that section.

"It will be weird to have a guy in a final that has never been there before," he said. "Yeah, I mean, the bottom half of the draw has opened up. There's no way to not see that. There's a chance for everyone there."
