Emirates ATP Rankings Update: Who remains alive for London in Paris?

Emirates ATP Rankings Update: Who remains alive for London in Paris?

Before we get to this week's Paris Masters, and how that tournament will shape the field at the Nitto ATP Finals in London, let's turn to the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan.

The field for the inaugural 21-and-under event is nearly set: Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanov, Denis Shapovalov, Borna Coric, Jared Donaldson, Hyeon Chung and Daniil Medvedev have qualified; Alexander Zverev, the runaway points leader, will not play Milan, choosing instead to focus on London.

Just missing the cut were Frances Tiafoe (by 90 ranking points) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (by 166 ranking points). Both will travel to Milan as alternates.

The remaining berth in the eight-player field will be determined by a qualifying tournament between the top eight 21-and-under Italian players, held on November 3-5, also in Milan.

Emirates ATP Rankings Update: Who remains alive for London in Paris?

Last week's tournaments in Basel and Vienna made the London qualification scenarios clearer, but two spots still remain available. Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev, Dominic Thiem, Marin Cilic and Grigor Dimitrov have already qualified, and seven players have a realistic shot at claiming one of the final berths:

David Goffin (2,885 points; 7th place): He'll qualify if he reaches the semifinals in Paris.

Pablo Carreno Busta (2,605 points; 8th place) and Sam Querrey (2,525 points; 9th place): Either player would qualify with a title in Paris, and there's almost no chance both will qualify—that's because they're slated to meet in the third round. Carreno Busta opens against Nicolas Mahut; Querrey opens against Filip Krajinović.

Kevin Anderson (2,470 points; 10th place), Juan Martin del Potro (2,415 points; 11th place) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2,310 points; 12th place): All can qualify by winning the title. Anderson opens against Fernando Verdasco or Rublev and is in Thiem's quarter. Del Potro opens against Paolo Lorenzi and is in Zverev's and Dimtrov's quarter. Tsonga opens against Julien Benneteau and is in Cilic's and Goffin's quarter.

Also in Anderson's quarter is a player whose title in Vienna catapulted him up the rankings at the last minute, Lucas Pouille (2,145 points, 13th place):

The Frenchman will need to reach the final to even have a chance at qualifying for London, but giving himself any shot whatsoever is commendable. He'll open against either Feliciano Lopez or Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
