Karolina Pliskova vs. Caroline Wozniacki

It’s hard to think of a more appropriate year-ending confrontation than this one. Pliskova vs. Wozniacki has been a consistent theme of 2017: They’ve played five times over the last nine months, and the series has seesawed back and forth with each meeting. Pliskova won in Doha, Eastbourne, and Cincinnati; Wozniacki won in Miami and Toronto. The matches themselves have also had a theme—Pliskova’s wins have all come in straight sets, while both of Wozniacki’s have been in three. If Pliskova’s shots are clicking, there’s not much Wozniacki can do about them. But if Wozniacki can turn it into war, make Pliskova uncomfortable, make the match ugly, she can win. The slow courts have favored Wozniacki so far in Singapore, but Pliskova has mostly been clicking. She’s also had an extra day of rest.

Winner: Pliskova

Venus Williams vs. Caroline Garcia

There won’t be any secrets in the semifinal between Pliskova and Wozniacki, but this one will provide some mystery. Williams and Garcia have played just twice; they’ve split those matches; and the last one was in 2014. And that’s what makes this matchup intriguing: It’s hard to know exactly what will happen when Venus, a hard-hitting veteran of countless big matches past, faces off against Garcia, a versatile 24-year-old who has made a meteoric rise into the game’s upper echelon over the last month. Can Venus continue hitting with the depth that handcuffed Garbiñe Muguruza on Thursday? Can Garcia get Venus on the move, and close out points at the net? The one thing these two women have in common right now is that each is finding ways to win. Now one of them must lose.

Winner: Williams
