Caroline Wozniacki is finding life at No. 1 a lot better with a major in tow.
The 27-year-old first reached the top ranking back in 2010. Despite a lengthy stay at the top, she had not won a Grand Slam until capturing the Australian Open a few weeks ago.
The victory also returned her to the top—with a big difference.
"I have not gotten the question of being [a Slamless] No. 1, so that's a big change and it's a difference I'm very happy about," the Dane said in Doha.
Wozniacki will now get to keep her top spot for longer, having defeated Angelique Kerber to reach the Doha semifinals while No. 2 Simona Halep withdrew with a foot injury.
Climbing back to the top has been tougher than the first time, said Wozniacki, which also adds to the satisfaction.
"I think the first time I reached it, it was an incredible feeling because it had always been my dream and something I never knew if it was ever possible. And I think getting back there was even harder," she said. "Just because a lot of things had happened in the meantime, and it was a long time in between. And then doing it winning the Australian Open was a very special feeling, and it's something I'm very proud of."
She's looking to keep the positive momentum going, while managing her schedule and figuring out what's next.
"I think for me the fact that I got a Slam and the world No. 1 ranking back I've basically achieved everything that I wanted," she said. "It's hard to beat that, and you definitely have to rethink and refocus and just try and think of what's the next thing you want to achieve.
"So it's all about—for me—just trying to stay focused and trying to stay relaxed and just enjoying it."
