Stanislas Wawrinka is aiming to return to competition at Madrid, having not played since experiencing more knee issues during his comeback.

The three-time Grand Slam champion underwent double knee surgery in 2017, returning at the Australian Open and playing two other events before retiring with knee pain at Marseille.

"The good thing is from a surgical point of view, everything's good," he told RTS in a television interview at Monte Carlo, where he resides and has been training alongside the players competing at the ATP Masters there this week.

Wawrinka indicated that his appearance at Madrid is still tentative, saying that he is not chasing ranking points or pushing himself to return.

"The goal is to train as much as possible, to be fit to rediscover a good level," he said.

Wawrinka is No. 21 in the rankings.
