Andy Murray says he is still experiencing some pain in his hip but is in better shape as he gets set for a return to competition next week.

The former world No. 1, who underwent hip surgery almost a year ago, took a long offseason break to rehab the injury.

"I still have some pain in my hip, but I need to play matches," he was quoted as saying by the Brisbane Courier-Mail, adding that it was "definitely a bit better" than a year before, when he withdrew from the tournament to have surgery.

Murray also said he has improved during the previous few months, and is looking to play four or five matches in a row to assess his level. The 31-year-old has played just one event since the US Open.

His goal during the Australian events is to just "feel like I am able to compete and not be restricted by my hip," indicating he is not yet aiming for titles at this point in his comeback.

Murray is still ranked below the Top 250 in the rankings.
