In their first meeting on clay, Daniil Medvedev recovered to advance past Stefanos Tsitsipas, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, in the Monte Carlo round of 16.

No. 6-seeded Stefanos, who won his second career ATP title in Marseille earlier this season, was hoping to score his first win against Medvedev after three failed attempts last year.

"[Daniil] has a different game than other players. He has a good serve... it can get really aggressive and frustrating to return," said Tsitsipas following his opener.

Medvedev, who captured Sofia Open in February, became the first player to win 20 tour-level matches this season following his win on Thursday.

Up next for the 23-year-old Russian is either No. 1-seeded Novak Djokovic or Taylor Fritz.
