Sloane Stephens was all business today in a relatively comfortable 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Misaki Doi. The defending finalist overpowered the Japanese world No. 110 with her sheer weight of shot, especially on her forehand side.

The match was smooth sailing for Stephens until she conceded two consecutive breaks of serve while up 4-2 in the second set, eventually closing out the match in a tiebreak.

"She raised her level... I just had to match her there at the end," Stephens said of Doi's late push to level the set.

Stephens feasted on the Doi second serve, winning 65 percent of her second-serve return points.

The American No. 1 will play again on Wednesday giving her a full 72 hours of down time.

“I don't know what I'm even going to do with myself," she said. "I'm, like, super confused with what's happening with the draw.”

The world No. 7 will face off  against the tricky Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo on Wednesday.
