Trivia: Petra Martic and Marketa Vondrousova are playing each other in the quarterfinals today. When was the last time two first-time major quarterfinalists played each other in a Major quarterfinal? Check back tomorrow for the answer.

The first four quarterfinals take the court today

That’s two men’s quarterfinals (Rafael Nadal-Kei Nishikori and Roger Federer-Stan Wawrinka) and two women’s quarterfinals (Sloan Stephens-Johanna Konta and Martic-Vondrousova).

This is the first time in 15 years that three US women are in the French Open quarterfinals

The last time this many were in the quarterfinals here was 2004 (the Williams sisters and Jennifer Capriati).

The last time three women other than the Williams sisters were in the quarters here was 1986

They were Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Mary Joe Fernandez and Kathy Rinaldi. Nadal was born during that tournament.

Federer and Nadal have identical winning percentages in major quarterfinals

Federer has a 43-10 record in major quarterfinals (81.1%) and Nadal’s 30-7 (81.1%).

Federer is 22-3 against Wawrinka, but his head-to-head advantage shrinks to 4-3 on clay and 2-1 here

Wawrinka has won 6 of his last 9 matches against Top 3 players at Slams (and 7 of his last 11).

Wawrinka is coming off the longest singles match of his career

His 5:09, 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-4, 3-6, 8-6 win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last round was the longest singles match he has ever played (and the longest match of 2019). He has played one longer match in doubles: partnering with Marco Chiudinelli, he lost a doubles rubber in Davis Cup competition in 2013 to Tomas **Berdych and Lukas Rosol in 7:02, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 24-22.

That 7:02 doubles loss is the second-longest match on record after John Isner and Nicolas **Mahut’s 11:05.

Federer is trying to tie Navratilova for second-most Grand Slam semifinals in the Open Era, male or female

If he wins today, he’ll reach his 44th Slam semifinal, tying Navratilova (Evert leads with 52).

Nadal is 10-2 against Nishikori, and 4-0 on clay

Nishikori has never beaten a Top 20 player at Roland Garros either, going 0-6, so beating a No.2-ranked 11-time champion would be a breakthrough.

Stephens has won 24 of her last 29 matches at majors

She is 0-2 against Konta, though, including a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-1 loss in Rome 19 days ago. The Brit’s also an impressive 14-3 on clay this year.

Vondrousova has won more matches since Australia than anyone on the women’s tour

Since falling to Martic in the second round of the Australian Open, she is 25-5, reaching the quarterfinals or better everywhere she has played (including Indian Wells, Miami, Rome and now Roland Garros).

Trivia Answer from yesterday: The player with Moldovan Olympian parents was AlionaBolsova (who played Amanda Anisimova).
