Thiem was set to make his grass-court debut at the NOVENTI OPEN after a strong clay-court season; he captured the Barcelona Open, defeating then-defending champion Rafael Nadal on his way to the trophy, and reached the French Open final for the second consecutive time—losing to the eventual champion Nadal.

Meanwhile, No. 3-ranked Roger Federer, who reached Roland Garros semifinals, is set to kick off his grass-court campaign in Halle. The Swiss has captured the event nine times before in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017.
