Well, that was fast.

Just days after announcing a major coaching shake-up, Naomi Osaka already appears to have added another heavyweight name to her team. On Tuesday, the former world No. 1 was spotted on the practice courts in Montreal with Iga Swiatek’s former coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, after parting ways with coach Patrick Mouratoglou on Sunday.

The move completes a full-circle coaching swap between Osaka and Swiatek. Last October, Swiatek split with Wiktorowski and went on to hire Wim Fissette—Osaka’s coach since returning to tennis following the 2023 birth of her daughter, and who worked with the Japanese player during two of her four major titles in their first coaching stint (2020-22).

Now, nearly a year later, Osaka and Wiktorowski—who guided Swiatek to four of her first five majors, including the 2022 US Open—are teaming up for what appears to be a trial week at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers.

Osaka and Mouratoglou had worked together since September 2024, after she hired him to replace Fissette. The partnership showed early promise, including a run to the final in Auckland and a title at WTA 125K St. Malo—the latter a part of an eight-match winning streak on clay, her least favorite surface.

But injuries and inconsistency disrupted her momentum. Since mid-May, she’s gone 4-5, including a first-round exit at Roland Garros and a straight-sets loss to Emma Raducanu last week in Washington, D.C.

Following that defeat, Osaka confirmed the coaching change via Instagram Stories: "Merci Patrick. It was such a great experience learning from you. Wishing you nothing but the best. You're one of the coolest people I've ever met and I'm sure I'll see you around."

Mouratoglou echoed the sentiment in a post of his own: “After 10 months of collaboration, we have decided to part ways professionally. I am grateful for the trust, the journey and what we have built together.”

A day later, Polish press first reported that Wiktorowski was en route to Montreal to begin their coaching trial. The news was confirmed by journalist Courtney Nguyen after speaking with Osaka’s agent, Stuart Duguid of Evolve. According to Duguid, this week is a first meeting and trial period—with “full-on coaching” potentially to follow.

On Tuesday, tennis media personality Blair Henley shared a photo of the pair hitting on the practice courts following Osaka’s 6-4, 6-2 win over Ariana Arseneault in the opening round.

Osaka will be back in action on Wednesday—where all eyes will be on her coaching box as she faces No. 13 seed Liudmila Samsonova.
