Ben Shelton vs. Adrian Mannarino: Match Preview

After three years on tour, Shelton seems to be coming into his own at 22. In 2025, he has improved month by month, to the point where he’s now a fixture in Grand Slam second weeks, as well as the Top 10.

In the 37-year-old Mannarino, though, the American will be running up against a ghost from his apprentice days. The two played once in 2023, and again at the start of 2024, and the Frenchman won both times—6-4 in the fifth at the 2024 Australian Open. Mannarino, with his soft hands, counterpunching skills, ultra-flat strokes and creative angles, is the definition of the crafty veteran, and he gave the young American a couple of lessons in how to disrupt a bigger, stronger, younger opponent.

HIGHLIGHTS: Adrian Mannarino lines up Toronto clash with Ben Shelton

All of which makes this an interesting test of Shelton’s progress, and his ability to win away from the Slam spotlight.

On paper, he has already left Mannarino in the dust. He’s ranked seventh, and has a 26-16 record in 2025; Mannarino is 94th, and 5-8 on the year. But Shelton will still have to prove he knows how to handle the skimming, deceptively difficult shots that the easy-swinging Mannarino sends his way. We’ll see what Ben has learned in the last 20 months, and if his days of losing to crafty veterans are behind him. Winner: Shelton
