Iga Swiatek vs. Clara Tauson: Match Preview

Is it starting to feel like 2022 again, when the only question worth asking on the WTA side was: Can anyone stop Iga? We’re not there yet. She still has only one title in 2025, after all. But the Polish Steamroller seems to be getting revved up again. She won the Wimbledon final with a double bagel; she’s hungry enough to get back to No. 1 that she didn’t skip Montreal; and she’s lost eight games in her first two matches there.

“I feel good,” she says. “I feel like I played two solid matches.”

That’s about as celebratory as Swiatek is likely to sound.

Judging from their previous matches, Tauson isn’t the ideal opponent to slow a Swiatek roll. She’s 0-3 against her. The most recent of those meetings was a 6-4, 6-1 win for Iga at Wimbledon last month.

But Tauson has been playing at a higher level this season than she showed that day. This year she has a title, a 30-15 record, a win over Aryna Sabalenka, and a Top 20 ranking for the first time. The 6-foot former junior No. 1 can also slug with anyone, a fact that Swiatek is aware of.

“That’s going to be the first time I play a heavy hitter here,” Iga says.“So I think I’ll need to adjust to that, but when she plays in, she plays great.”

“When we played, I feel like I was solid enough for her to miss a bit more, but I know that she’s this kind of player that when she feels it, you know, she’s going to play well.”

Tauson has a strong serve and hits big enough to rush Swiatek, but she’ll have to be at her best to beat her. Otherwise, Swiatek has the edge in terms of speed, and her corner-to-corner ground-stroke style may be just what’s needed to keep Tauson from getting a good swing on the ball. Winner: Swiatek
