During last year’s US Open, Leylah Fernandez soaked up the atmosphere and opportunity of playing alongside Venus Williams for the first time en route to a memorable quarterfinal run.

In Melbourne Friday, the Canadian debuted another first-time partnership with one of Australia’s most recognizable faces.

Teaming up with Nick Kyrgios, the two starred inside ANZ Arena by winning from three match points down against a team that has shared two mixed doubles titles together. Facing Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski, the wild card pairing prevailed with a 6-7 (6), 6-4 [12-10] victory.

“It was a lot of fun. My goodness,” reacted Fernandez. “I keep hearing how the crowd here in the AO is very rowdy, it's a party, and finally I have the chance to experience it, and I also get the chance to kind of compare it to the US Open. It's just very electric.

“I was just excited to play the next point. I totally forgot the score sometimes and just enjoyed my time with them.”

Mixed doubles presents the former Grand Slam singles finalists an additional opportunity to leave the Happy Slam, well happy. Fernandez went down in her singles and doubles openers, while Kyrgios—who decided ahead of the tournament that he wasn’t ready for best-of-five sets in singles—lost a tight doubles match with injured tour bestie Thansai Kokkinakis.

“I have obviously played some amazing matches at AO, but that's got to be one of my favorite ones,” declared Kyrgios. “Like, 9-6 down, 7-3, realistically, tennis players, you don't always believe you can come back. But I was like, ‘Look, if we're just one at a time, maybe we can do it.’”

The idea of joining forces initially came up in the opening week of the 2026 season when Fernandez and her father were having a light-hearted conversation.

“We said, ‘Wouldn't it be cool if Nick and I, we played doubles together?’ We were just talking like that, jokingly a little bit. And I feel like my dad took the initiative.

“Nick was nice enough to say, yes. I immediately sent the message, and it was just kind of started off that way. Great that it worked out.”

Kyrgios shared following his exit with Kokkinakis that he doesn’t know what comes next as it relates to his tour schedule. For now, expect the 30-year-old to stay present and enjoy the opportunity in front of him.

“That atmosphere out there was special, and no other sport can really mix the two and create that energy. So I think it's super competitive,” he said.

“The crowd, they were amazing all day, all night. They stayed, hung around. It was amazing. I'm really excited for our next round.”
