MATCH POINT: Coco Gauff gets Belinda Bencic revenge in Madrid 4R

Mutua Madrid Open Match Preview

The tour’s most talented youngsters will face off for the first time since 2023 with Mirra Andreeva and Coco Gauff both avoiding Monday’s blackout to advance and book one of the most intriguing quarterfinals of the week.

Andreeva and Gauff last met at the 2023 US Open where a then-16-year-old Andreeva, who had taken Gauff to three sets months earlier at Roland Garros, was overawed by the in-form American, who went on to win her first Grand Slam title.

Gauff has enjoyed her share of peaks since then, reaching the No. 2 ranking and capturing the 2024 WTA Finals, but Andreeva comes into Madrid with more momentum. Now 18, Andreeva is fresh off winning back-to-back WTA 1000 titles at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and the BNP Paribas Open. At the latter, she beat both Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka to win the title, and now sits comfortably inside the Top 10.

As is often the case, Gauff’s chances of victory will turn on her serve and forehand, the former showing steady improvements throughout the week in Madrid. After striking eight double faults against Dayana Yastremska in her opening round, she made just won to avenge her Indian Wells defeat to Belinda Bencic. Winner: AndreevaDavid Kane
