September 20 2025 - Roger Federer Tennis Channel Interview

Roger Federer says the vision he had for Europe versus The World "came true and more" with the establishment of the Laver Cup. But the Swiss believes the event has much more to give.

Federer joined Tennis Channel Live on Saturday in San Francisco, speaking to a wide range of topics. Namely, he discussed how the event he co-imagined, in its eighth year, has continued to raise the bar for the marriage of sport and entertainment.

"When I started the event with Tony [Godsick, his agent], the idea was that this has to be real tennis," he said. "This can't be a hit-and-giggle. For this, we can do exhibitions elsewhere.

"When you're sitting on the bench and next to you is a legendary player, and Rod Laver is in the building, I'm in the building, John McEnroe is in the building, legends are in the building, and they want to see the best tennis played, you come and perform. Plus, you have the whole team environment, wishing they maybe could be playing instead of you, so you have to show up for them as well.

"I think that whole dynamic creates bringing out the best, and giving really energetic vibes."

That's come from player buy-in: from surefire Hall of Famers like Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, to legends-in-the-making like Carlos Alcaraz. Federer called the Alcaraz's pulsating rivalry with Jannik Sinner "amazing for the game," even though Sinner isn't suiting up this weekend in San Francisco.

"I think we all knew that they were going to be good, maybe they were going to be great, most likely, but we didn't expect this kind of dominance right out of the gates. It's very impressive, I must admit, and it's amazing for the game."

"They've made a name for themselves, and that begs the question, 'Who's going to be the next guy?' ... It's going to be hard, and it's going to take some time. It's the question also, how long can they keep doing this? It's not easy. I've been there. It's hard, and they're making it look very easy."

After it stop in the Bay Area, the event will return to the O2 Arena in London next year. But following that, Federer said that the possibilities are endless.

"The goal was to play in places that don't get to see tennis too often. I think we did that here in San Francisco, in Berlin, in Vancouver," he said.

"The idea was to travel with the Laver Cup, but it's hard. ... The work that goes in from the team is tremendous. Everything that I've had in my vision together with Tony, came true and more. Let's see what goes after London, because in the beginning, the idea was to have it more in North America because of the players' schedule.

"Asia also probably would not be a bad move ... I would go to South America. Imagine this in South America with Joao [Fonseca] on the team. We unfortunately only have one Laver Cup a year, but I'm happy that a lot of cities are wanting to have the Laver Cup in their place now, because that wasn't the case in the beginning."
