There’s the Rogers Cup, and then there’s Roger’s Cup, which this tournament could be nicknamed. Roger Federer has won Cincinnati seven times, including last year, when he handed Novak Djokovic one of his rare defeats in 2015. This mid-August mandatory gathering is held on fast hard courts and in stifling temperatures, yet even in his mid-30s, Federer continues to lord over the competition in Cincy. There are many things we can point to that highlight Federer’s remarkable longevity, but none may illustrate it better than his dominance at this event.
That said, Federer won’t be in Ohio this year due to a season-ending knee injury. Nor will Djokovic, who is nursing a tender wrist before the U.S. Open. That leaves the door open for what will still be an impressive Masters-level field.
