In its 25 years on the tour calendar, Dubai has seen its status upgraded from an ATP 250 to 500. But this lucrative and exclusive event continues to punch above its weight. "Our priority was always to attract Top 10 players," says tournament director Salah Tahlak. Dubai's roll of champions reads like that of a Grand Slam—you have to go back to 2002, when Fabrice Santoro won the title, to find a champion ranked outside the Top 6. Roger Federer, a seven-time champion, has a second home in Dubai and raves about the city's amenities and comforts. "We look at all the Arabian hospitality," says Tahlak, citing the five-star Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, where most of the 32 main-draw entrants stay. "The average room is about 52 square meters, and a two-minute walk to the stadium."
