As for Tommy Haas, he won't play because of this rule: Tournament directors can't compete in their own event. "I first inquired about the role back in late 2015," said the 38-year-old, who's still active on tour. "But the timing wasn't right." The former No. 2 has a natural connection with the players, and now wants to spread his wings as part of Indian Wells' management team. "I can't wait to be out on the grounds with fans so they know how important they are to us."
